Are you afraid of asking a question? Perhaps “the question” that could change your entire future… Do you think fear could be holding you back? I know for me fear has held me back in the past and a lot of times I ask myself why I let it take control. So why do we let it control us? Why don’t we push back harder and be the boss of the situation? And why do we create this narrative that is so negative? It’s often the little thoughts in our heads that are holding us back from achieving our greatest accomplishments and dreams that drive our narrative. Do any of these thoughts sound familiar?
1. I want to ask my boss for a raise but I just can’t. I’m not sure what to say or how he or she will respond? It’s too daunting, so I just won’t bother…
2. I’m not very happy in my current job but I’m scared to lose the security of my paycheque and I have no idea where to begin searching for a new beginning…
3. I know I’m ready to make a move but I’m nervous to make the next step…
4. I’ve been so focused on being a mom for so long I have no idea who I am anymore and how to be who I want to be?
5. I know I need to create an identity for my company but I’m scared of what that means?
6. I want to start living a healthy life but I don’t even know where to start so never mind; I will start doing it another day…
Are you nodding your head at any of these, or a few? Or perhaps you’ve thought of your own fearful roadblocks that we like to do to ourselves? In life, we often let our fear control us and my question to you is to what end? Here is a great TED talk from Karen Thompson on what fear can teach us…
The reality is you are in control and own the narrative of your fear. The answer to your question is owned by you. As Karen said in her TED talk, your fears are part of your future and you predict that. Once you accept ownership for the outcome your path will begin to reveal itself. For me, my fear has been to reach out and ask for support and partnership in the development of our new business direction. My commitment to myself is to move past that and get over it! I am no longer going to be afraid to ask the questions that could change my future; will you support me? Can you give us a chance? Can we work together? How can I help you? I know if I ask the questions my community will respond so I am challenging myself to do it. Now I ask you what are you afraid to ask and are you willing to challenge yourself to ask that question that can change your future?
Until next time…
